Understanding SMTP and IMAP with a ChatGPT diagram
An example of asking ChatGPT about technical terms and checking their roles through a mail-flow diagram and comparison table.
When the meaning of a technical term is unclear, ask ChatGPT and review the explanation alongside a diagram. In this SMTP and IMAP example, the diagram showed the flow between a mail app and mail servers, making the roles of sending and viewing mail easier to distinguish.
The question in the screenshot was “Smtp と Imtp ってなんだっけ？” (“What were SMTP and IMTP again?”). ChatGPT suggested that IMTP probably meant IMAP, then showed the relationship between the mail app, the user’s mail server, and the recipient’s mail server in a diagram and comparison table. The question did not explicitly request a diagram; this is an example of using ChatGPT to understand how several terms relate to one another.
